The Harris Teeter about 1 mile up on Lee Hwy in Arlington is a much better, and geographically similar store.

Lately I've been trying to buy most of my groceries at local farmers markets. Doing so ensures that I eat a lot of fresh, local, organic produce. Whatever I can't get there I buy at the Whole Foods in Tenleytown.

Great recommendations! If you live on the northern end of town, the Whole Foods in downtown Silver Spring is good. Same advice applies, though: go during the week or early on Saturdays and Sundays. Parking can be a pain in the lot nearest WF, but there are parking garages around.

Schnieders on Georgia Avenue just before the Beltway is also great. They're tiny, but they have a good selection and good service.

The Giant on Park Road isn't too bad, as far as basic grocery stores go, and it's near Target, so you can kill two birds with one stone there, if need be. It has a good selection of Spanish/Mexican/Hispanic foods, if you're looking for that kind of stuff.

The Safeway on Georgia Avenue is useful for those of us who live up this way and works when you need an onion, late night ice cream fix, or a gallon of milk, but I wouldn't call it great or even laudable. Serviceable, yes. Extraordinary, no.

For all the pre-prepared foods and higher end/gourmet stuff, though, I'm with you: any WF and HT are winners.

The Giant in Van Ness, if you get there early on the weekends, is great. Small, but very clean, and usually well stocked.
