Today is the first day of winter, which means every girl from east to west is breaking out her Uggs, unless she is one of those who wears them year-round (please no). If Santa isn’t bringing you new ones, your sheepskin boots are probably stained from salt, slush and general winter residue, well fret not! I came across a little snippet in Lucky Magazine about suede cleaning, here is their wisdom:

1) Revive balding or matted spots by rubbing the area with a strip of fine sandpaper (talk to Kristen and Aviva if you need help choosing the correct brand, they are experts). Then, using the same pressure you would to check a pulse, work in a vertical – not circular – motion.

2) To remove salt stains, brush the area with a suede brush (a firm toothbrush also works) doused in a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution. Let the spots dry overnight, then go over them lightly with a clean, dry brush.

While we’re on the subject, I actually don’t want sheepskin Ugg’s at all right now, but rather these awesome guys, kinda intense, but great for a New England winter!

I have an accounting exam tomorrow, here’s a screen-shot of my study sheet (I get to bring it to the exam), Carly would be so proud:

Don’t you wish you were me?

This weekend Marc and I wanted to be turistas, but didn’t want to go far from home. The Hillwood Estate, right in the District was the perfect option. My friend Laura works there and graciously offered to take us around the home and vast gardens. It was absolutely lovely.

Founded by American collector and heiress to the Post cereal empire Marjorie Merriweather Post, Hillwood is one of the finest art collector’s museums in the United States as all the pieces come from Marjorie’s own private collection. I mean the lady had EVERYTHING, including a Dacha (I would too if I’d been the sole heir to Post Cereal).

The Dacha

She purchased the estate in 1955 with the intention of making it a museum upon her death. She spent the fall and spring at Hillwood, summered in the Adirondacks and spent her winters at Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, now owned by Donald Trump. I don’t blame her for staying away from DC in the summers!

The museum (i.e. her house) features the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia and a world-renowned collection of eighteenth-century French decorative art and furnishings. The collection includes Fabergé eggs, Russian porcelain, Russian Orthodox icons, Beauvais tapestries, and Sèvres porcelain. Encircled by woodlands bordering Rock Creek Park, the twenty-five acre estate provides visitors a tranquil oasis of luscious formal gardens ranging from a French Parterre to a Japanese Style Garden complete with a pond and waterfall. Her ashes even rest in the rose garden  on the estate!

When we arrived at Hillwood we watched a short film about Marjorie’s life and collections. She started collecting decorative art at a young age and became fascinated with Russian art when she traveled to Russia with her 3rd husband (GF didn’t mess when it came to men) who was the ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1937 to 1938. At that time the Soviet Government was selling the Tsar and Tsarina’s centuries old possessions like candy and Marjorie scored some awesome stuff. Later she hired her own curator to fill gaps in her collection. The most impressive piece for me was a Fabergé Egg given by Nicolas II to his mother. I’m not sure if she got the it while in Russia, or later, but either way, she got a Fabergé, she wins.

Our first stop on the tour was the gardens. We meandered through the French Parterre designed in the style of 18th century French gardens (think Versailles), then through the Rose Garden and Pet Cemetery, around the Japanese Style Garden, and made a stop in the Dacha, where they had an exhibit of some of Marjorie’s costumes. Back in the 1920’s instead of having cocktail parties in Rand Hall, the rich staged elaborate costume fetes, with hard core outfits. Marjorie’s were pretty awesome, no pictures were allowed inside so you’ll have to go check out her Marie Antoinette and American Indian costumes on your own. The umbrellas on the lawns were also awesome, her originals from the 1960’s

We also visited the greenhouses full of orchids and the cutting gardens where all the flowers that fill the house are grown. When you’re rich you don’t need to buy flowers at Whole Foods, your gardeners just grow them for you, DUH. Once done with the gardens we entered the mansion. It felt like being somewhere in Europe such as Windsor Castle or the Kaiser Apartments, wow. The entrance hall has a huge portrait of Catherine the Great (the big one over the stairs).

My favorite was the dining room. Marj had a TON of dishes and different ones are showcased throughout the house and of course on the dining room table. It was also fun to see her bedroom, closet and bathroom, complete with pink toilet paper.

I could go on and on, but bottom line, her collection is wonderful, the gardens are a perfect escape from a hot DC day, and it’s so close that you have no excuse not to get there stat! You must call ahead to make a reservation for your visit and can go any time of year, but of course warm months are better so you can enjoy the flowers!

If you need me I’ll be figuring out how I can procure my own Faberge Egg…

“Mmmm, I know it sounds cliche, but it really is true. Guinness just tastes better in Ireland.” Did you know that bars in Ireland were not even open on St. Patrick’s day until the 1970’s. It was considered a religious holiday, not a drinking one. I think it’s silly and C. Lander expresses my feelings  exactly. If you need me I’ll be wearing red and drinking Starbucks. Also, don’t try and trace your Irish heritage back to your great grandfather’s second cousin’s older sister. IT DOESN’T WORK, face it, you’re not Irish. However, if you like Riverdance, then we’ll talk…

Earlier this week Dana and I were having a heated GChat discussion about how to save money on make-up by buying some stuff at CVS instead of Sephora, Saks, Bloomies etc. In this recession one way to save is to buy less expensive beauty products. We both agreed that splurging is okay on face creams, but for everything else, there is probably a cheaper alternative that’s just as good. In fact, I’ve even found a few facial products that are!

Below I’ve highlighted a few things I use and friends use that work just as well as their more expensive counterparts. Bye Bye Sephora, Hello CVS.

First, is some mascara. I love NARS, but that’s about $25 now, instead for $8 Dana uses Cover Girl Lashblast  and loves it! You can get it in regular or waterproof.

For my lovely lips I just started using another Covergirl product, TruShine Lipcolor in Powder Pink Shine. It’s more like a gloss and perfect for everyday wear. Plus it is a lot less than the $30 Chanel lipstick I had before!

Next is bronzer, my little sister has always sworn by Wet N Wild bronzer and it looks great on her. I don’t know if I can part with my Bobbi Brown Bronzer, but if you can give it a try. It’s only $3!

Now that we have highlighted all this make-up I would like to introduce Almay eye makeup remover pads. The oil free kind is light and takes off that waterproof mascara and eyeliner perfectly. I use one every night before bed. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to pay more than $6 for eye makeup remover!

Moving on the the rest of the face. Kate swears by Olay Foaming Face Wash. At $4 it really can’t be beat. I know it’s fun to buy expensive facewash, but really, if you only want to splurge on one facial product, stick to moisturizer. Face wash WASHES OFF, why spend $30 on something that goes right down the drain!

Earlier this year before Fresh Soy made a comeback Allie told me about Eucerin Q10 Lotion. It was recommended to her by makeup artists in LA who said it was the best SPF lotion to wear under makeup. I really love it and think it’s just as good as any other daytime moisturizer with SPF. Not greasy and makes my skin look and feel great.

Okay, this is where the readers come in. Dana and I both want some good inexpensive eyeshadow, please give some suggestions and I’ll post them all.

Happy saving!

I love this new blog, thank you NY Times  for alerting me to its existence. However, I’m glad I’m dating an MBA candidate, rather than a banker. Enjoy!

This long weekend in DC may or may not be crazy. It seems almost everyone in the district has Tuesday off and most lucky people (myself included) also have Monday off. Wahoo for a 4 day weekend. However, with millions expected to descend on our little city it could be a nightmare. Luckily I have some fun things planned, so even if I can’t sleep at night due to shouts of “Obama” etc. I’ll be having a good time!

Friday Evening: Russia house for KAK’s birthday. House infused Vodka’s, Baltica #8 Beer, and hopefully not many tourists, they don’t really know about this spot. I’m not even linking to it! SORRY.

baltika

Saturday: Marc gets in. He decided to fly instead of drive, which is a good plan because all bridges out of DC will be closed Tuesday when he leaves. Driving would be a potential nightmare. We are going to brunch at Cafe Milano. I’ve never been but the Z family tells me the pizzas are “dope.” That evening we are going to catch up with a lot of old friends. Location TBD.

Sunday: Sleeping in and then attempting to go to the “We are One” concert at the Lincoln Memorial. It should be cold and absolutely packed, but why not join the fun. You only get Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, U2, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Renee Fleming, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, Heather Headley, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, John Mellencamp, Usher Raymond IV, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder all together at the same time maybe once in a lifetime. Don’t worry you can watch it on HBO at 7pm, HBO will be free to everyone for the performance. They are opening up their signal or something techie like that.

Sunday Evening: Get’s it’s own paragraph because we are going to the opening of a new trashy bar in Adam’s Morgan called the City Tavern and guess who is going to be there – THE CAST OF THE HILLS – omgomgomgomg I don’t even care which cast members are there. The teen in me like abso cannot wait omfg. Then maybe we are going to the Moby Concert at the 9:30 club if we can find tickets.

hillscast

Monday: Rest and eat Chinese food. Maybe bake cookies.

Tuesday: Attempt to attend the inauguration of our 44th President and also go visit my state senators after the ceremony if it is even possible to get over to the Hill. Little does everyone know almost every Rep and Senator holds lunches after the ceremony and you can pretty much just walk in. At least we did last time, this time it might be really different though.

For now though…
